The West African Project Programme and Portfolio Management Association (WAPMASS), on Thursday, advised governments in the sub-region to adopt project management to save funds.
The President of the association, Mr Samuel Ofunwa, gave the advice in Abuja at a news conference.
He said countries in the region spent huge funds on projects that could have turned out better if properly managed.
He added that research had shown that while African countries spent similar amounts with developed nations on similar projects, the developed nations end up with far better results.
“We have a vision to see West Africa become equivalent if not better than the rest of the world; there seem to be this thing about West African projects that is different from projects all over the World.
“The way we administer projects in the sub-region is costing us as much if not more than other people in other part of the globe, yet we are not delivering quality, we are not delivering standards.
“What we are lacking here is project management and best practices.’’
Ofuwa said that when projects were not executed using standards, such projects begin to fall apart soon after completion, thereby requiring major maintenance which might cost a lot of money.
He said the association wanted to discover, develop, defend, deliver and encourage project management and best practice among ECOWAS nations.
The association, he added, currently had representation in seven West African nations and was aimed at creating an umbrella of motivated people who would be project management ambassadors.
The association president noted that even though everyone could be a potential project manager, the association required people who were interested in making things better, to register as members.
“This is because we intend to inculcate in our members, sustainable methodologies for effective project management.
“We also want the change to start with us as individuals and then affect others around us.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the association would be officially inaugurated on Saturday, May 3, 2014 in Abuja.
